Why Fairies?

Why did we decide upon a fairy theme for this collection of lullabies?

Fairies make a beautiful theme because of their deep roots in folklore across many cultures. In Celtic traditions, especially in Ireland and Scotland, fairies were imagined as gentle (though sometimes mischievous) beings who lived in meadows, forests, and hollow hills. These stories often carried a soft, twilight atmosphere—moonlight, whispering winds, and hidden glens—which naturally aligns with the calming mood of a lullaby. Even when folklore portrayed fairies as powerful or unpredictable, they were closely tied to nature, seasons, and the rhythms of the earth, all of which translate beautifully into soothing, dreamlike imagery for children drifting off to sleep.

In literature, fairies have long been associated with enchantment and wonder. From the delicate fairy attendants in A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the benevolent fairy godmother in Cinderella, they are often depicted as small guardians who guide, protect, or quietly influence human lives. This protective quality makes them ideal figures in lullabies, where reassurance and safety are key themes. A song about fairies watching over a sleeping child, sprinkling stardust, or weaving gentle dreams continues a long literary tradition of portraying them as comforting presences in the night.

In modern culture, fairies remain vivid and beloved, appearing in children’s books, films, and fantasy worlds such as Peter Pan and its iconic fairy, Tinker Bell. Today’s audiences tend to see fairies as symbols of imagination, innocence, and possibility—qualities that pair naturally with bedtime storytelling. A lullaby collection centered on fairies can draw from this shared cultural imagery, blending folklore’s soft mysticism with modern whimsy. The result is a theme that feels timeless yet current, magical yet gentle—perfect for carrying children from wakefulness into a peaceful, enchanted sleep.
